The Second ILDC Regional Workshop in Karnataka, scheduled for 21–22 August 2026 in Bengaluru, will focus on strengthening the role of Panchayats in land governance amid Karnataka’s rapid urban, infrastructural and ecological transformation. The workshop will examine how the conversion of agricultural land, commons and peri-urban landscapes is affecting rural livelihoods, community rights and climate resilience. Over two days, participants will discuss land access, commons, landlessness, the concerns of small and marginal landholders, and the institutional role of Panchayats in natural-resource governance. It will also explore the influence of land markets, real estate, infrastructure development, renewable energy and the growing financialisation of land on individual holdings and common resources. Bringing together Panchayat representatives, practitioners, researchers, NGOs and civil-society organisations, the workshop will consider how Panchayat-led governance can be strengthened to improve access to land, protect local livelihoods and support ecological and climate resilience in Karnataka.
