ILDC Regional Workshop

About

ILDC Regional Meet – Northeast India

The ILDC Regional Workshop – Northeast India, organised by CLANS and hosted by IIT Guwahati, is a two-day regional platform for dialogue and exchange on land, customary institutions and sustainable development in Northeast India. The workshop will be held on 2–3 November 2026 at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), under the theme “Viksit Bharat 2047: Land, Customary Institutions and Sustainable Future in NE India.”
While the India Land and Development Conference (ILDC) operates as a national platform on land governance, land rights and land-based development, land questions in the Northeast are shaped by distinct constitutional protections, customary tenure systems and community-led approaches to managing land and natural resources. The regional workshop creates space for these experiences and perspectives to inform wider conversations on land and development.
The workshop will bring together community leaders and customary institutions, government representatives, civil society organisations, researchers, practitioners, academia, philanthropic and private-sector actors, creating opportunities for dialogue across different forms of knowledge and governance.

What will the workshop explore?

The programme will combine plenary sessions, parallel thematic discussions, interactive workshops and a fireside dialogue, allowing participants to share grounded experiences, examine emerging challenges and identify practical pathways forward.  Discussions will focus on four interconnected themes:

Customary Tenure, Plural Legal Systems & State Interfaces

Commons, Shifting Cultivation (Jhum) Landscapes & Agroecology

Geospatial Technologies, Cadastral Demarcation & Community Data Sovereignty

Nature Markets, Climate Finance & Community-Led MRV
