India’s commitment to achieving 448 GW of solar capacity by 2030 presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Large-scale solar installations, while crucial for clean energy transition, compete with agricultural land creating a “food versus energy” dilemma for millions of smallholder farmers. Agrivoltaics offers the dual use of land for solar energy generation and agricultural production as a scalable and sustainable solution to this challenge.
India’s agrivoltaics landscape is steadily evolving through a blend of experimental pilots, institutional backing, and emerging momentum in policy and crop-appropriate design. Beginning with a pilot in Gujarat in 2012, India now hosts over 30 demo sites nationwide with different designs for testing a range of crops in several agro-climatic zones. Initial findings reveal benefits such as improved water use efficiency, resilient and sometimes enhanced yields under partial shading, plus added livelihood opportunities like solar grazing. Yet, challenges remain; higher system costs (20–40% above standard solar), need for region- and crop-specific design guidance, unclear policy on permissible land coverage and yield thresholds, and hesitant farmer adoption due to upfront investments and uncertain outcomes.
BAIF, with its six decades of experience in rural livelihood enhancement, agroforestry, and clean energy solutions, is ideally positioned to fill this gap. BAIF demonstrated functional agrivoltaics systems across three states Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka generating the actionable data, viable business models, and location and crop specific knowledge. The IWMI-Tata Program (ITP) is also experimenting with the farmer-centric models of agrivoltaics in Gujarat, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh blending them with lift irrigation scheme with Collectives for Integrated Livelihoods (CInI) and solar microgrids with Transform Rural India (TRI).
Objectives of the Session
To discuss India’s potential, progress till date and challenges in scaling farmer-centric agrivoltaics in India
To discuss BAIF’s and ITP’s agrivoltaics pilots’ experiences
To deliberate potential benefits to climate, community, and country
To identify pathways for scaling up and policy level support to pass the benefits to the farming community
